The beneficial effects of Magnesium on stress responses in the horse have been extensively demonstrated. It is important here that the magnesium compound in the supplement must be sufficiently bioavailable. A first requirement for this is that the compound is dissociated as far as possible in the intestinal tract, so that the Magnesium is present as a free ion so that it can be absorbed by the intestine. Only a few inorganic salts meet these requirements. This is not the case, for example, for magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide. Also organic compounds, such as magnesium stearate, are not always well dissociated. Magnesium sulphate.7aq is very soluble and dissociated. Furthermore, there is a limit to the amount that can be absorbed by the intestine per unit of time, so that a regular spread of the daily dose over, for example, 2 doses is preferred. Magnesium is also not stored for future needs, but must be constantly replenished. And finally, there are boosters, which exceptionally increase the magnesium absorption. The beneficial effect of L-Tryptophan on resistance to stress is also known. Tryptophan is the amino acid precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in inhibiting aggression, anxiety and stress in several animal species and humans. Beneficial effects are only obtained with a correct dosage of this amino acid; overdoses and underdoses are unfavorable.

L-Theanine is an amino acid derivative that occurs, among other things, in green tea. By promoting the serotonin and dopamine levels, it brings peace and relaxation, without sedating. It is effective against anxiety. Chemically, L-theanine blocks the binding of L-glutamic acid to the glutamate receptors in the brain, creating a relaxed state. In general, many of these supplements act as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptor agonists and to increase GABA levels. Researchers conducted multiple studies on humans and mice and found remarkable benefits of L-theanine administration in reducing stress responses. The alpha brain waves, characteristic of relaxation, increased and the beta waves, which are most often measured in stress, decreased.

A recent study on horses also showed the beneficial effects of various types of stress and a positive interest in new things.

Hops, like cannabis, belong to the Cannabacea family, for which stress reduction is known. Favorable stress-relief properties have also been demonstrated for the bitter acids (alpha and beta) of Humulus Lupus (hops), and hop extracts are also used for human application. Here too, influencing GABA receptors would play a role as well as serotonin production.

Bacopa monnieri is a tropical plant from the plantain family. The anti-stress properties of the extracts have been demonstrated in both humans and animals.

And finally – but just as important – there is the health of the horse microbiome. Recent studies have discovered the link between the gut microbiome and the brain. A disrupted microbiome can influence stress responses. Regulation of the microbiome-brain-gut axis is essential for maintaining homeostasis (where the organisms maintain internal equilibrium despite external influence), including that of the central nervous system. In addition, there is now mounting evidence to support the assumption that the gut microorganisms play a role in initial programming and subsequent reactivity of the individual’s stress system.
