BREED GOLD STALLION is a highly concentrated, liquid and natural supplement, specifically developed to optimise the reproductive function of stallions.

It contains a powerful blend of:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA)

  • Natural vitamin E tocopherols

  • Vitamin A

This combination supports sperm production, quality and motility, thereby helping to increase the chances of successful fertilisation.

Breeding is a costly undertaking. If the mare does not become pregnant, it often means waiting an entire year. Improving the fertility of the stallion increases the likelihood that the mare will produce that highly desired foal.

With the right nutrients and well-considered dietary management, the stallion is given the best possible chance of successful reproduction. BREED GOLD STALLION provides essential support in this process.

The cycle of sperm production and maturation (spermatogenesis) takes an average of 65 days. This means that it may take up to 3 months before the positive effects of supplementation become fully noticeable.

👉 Therefore, it is recommended to start supplementation well in advance of the breeding season.
👉 Nevertheless, BREED GOLD STALLION can also deliver noticeable results in urgent cases over a shorter period of time.

Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA)

Why are they essential?
Horses (and stallions) cannot synthesise omega-3 fatty acids themselves and are therefore entirely dependent on dietary intake or supplementation. Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA) have proven anti-inflammatory effects, in contrast to the more common omega-6 fatty acids, which are often pro-inflammatory.

Effects on fertility and sperm quality:

Improved motility and vitality:
Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids improve sperm motility (“stronger swimmers”), increase viability and contribute to a higher fertilisation rate, especially in stallions with marginal fertility.

Improved pregnancy rates:
Stallions receiving additional omega-3 supplementation showed higher pregnancy rates, even in stallions with reduced fertility.

Protection during cooling and freezing of semen:
Semen with a higher omega-3/omega-6 ratio, and more specifically a higher DHA/DPA ratio, is more resistant to stress caused by cooling and freezing.
→ Result: less cellular damage and a higher fertilisation capacity when using cooled or frozen semen.

Scientific studies

1. DHA supplementation (14 weeks):
Supplementation with DHA for 14 weeks resulted in:

  • a threefold increase in DHA levels in semen,

  • a 50% increase in the DHA/omega-6 ratio,

  • improved motility characteristics of cooled semen,

  • particularly significant improvements in stallions with marginal fertility under AI conditions.

2. Caspian & miniature horses (PUFAs via fish oil):
In a study involving Caspian miniature horses, stallions receiving omega-3-rich fish oil showed clear improvements in:

  • spermatozoa motility and viability,

  • acrosomal conformation,

  • plasma membrane integrity.

3. Oral supplementation with fish oil + thyme:
In another study, stallions supplemented with fish oil and thyme showed improvements in sperm quality, motility and plasma membrane integrity of cooled semen.

Synergy with antioxidants

Because a higher PUFA content (such as omega-3 fatty acids) increases the risk of oxidative stress, combination with antioxidants (especially vitamin E and coenzyme Q10) is indispensable. This prevents lipid peroxidation and protects the cell membranes of spermatozoa from damage.

Summary:
Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA) are indispensable for optimal sperm quality and fertility in stallions. They improve motility, vitality and fertilisation capacity of sperm, protect against damage caused by cooling and freezing, and are most effective when combined with antioxidants.

Vitamin E (natural tocopherols)

Why is it essential?
Spermatozoa naturally produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a by-product of mitochondrial activity. When the balance between ROS production and neutralisation is disrupted, severe oxidative damage to sperm occurs.

Specific to stallions:
Stallion sperm is characterised by exceptionally strong mitochondrial activity (stronger than in many other mammals). This means that the mitochondria in stallion sperm are particularly susceptible to dysfunction and oxidative damage.
The use of PUFAs (such as omega-3 fatty acids) further increases this risk, making antioxidant protection absolutely essential.

Role of vitamin E:
Vitamin E, particularly natural alpha-D-tocopherol, acts as a powerful antioxidant that counteracts lipid peroxidation and protects sperm cells. BREED GOLD STALLION contains all natural tocopherols of the vitamin E group for broad antioxidant protection.

Scientific studies

1. Vitamin E & cooled semen:
In a study involving 15 stallions, animals received either 3,000 IU of vitamin E daily for 14 weeks or a standard diet.
→ Result: significant improvement in total and progressive motility of semen stored cooled for 48 hours, after reheating for 10 to 30 minutes.

2. Vitamin E as an antioxidant against oxidative damage:
Multiple studies demonstrate that supplementation with antioxidants such as vitamin E (with or without PUFAs) strengthens defence mechanisms against ROS, thereby reducing oxidative stress and associated sperm damage.

3. Alpha-tocopherol acetate (60 days):
In a placebo-controlled study, stallions received 1,500 mg of alpha-tocopherol acetate per day for 60 days.
→ Result: significantly improved viability, progressive motility and morphology of sperm cells, with increased antioxidant levels in seminal plasma.

4. Combination of antioxidants + PUFAs (omega-3/omega-6):
In a cross-over trial (2 × 4 stallions, 60 days supplementation with 60 days wash-out), improvements were observed in:

  • progressive motility of spermatozoa,

  • integrity of plasma membranes,

  • integrity of acrosomal membranes (essential for fertilisation).

These effects were attributed to the combined use of PUFAs and antioxidants, with vitamin E providing protection against excessive lipid peroxidation (damage to cell membranes that can severely impair sperm function).

Summary:
Vitamin E is not only an antioxidant but an absolute prerequisite to fully realise the positive effects of PUFAs (omega-3 fatty acids) on fertility, without increasing the risk of oxidative damage.
